Fun With Time Attack

As some of you who follow me on Twitter may be aware, I’m a fan of Mega Man 10. On Monday, some new downloadable content came out that I’ve been enjoying a lot – specifically, a new level that you can play in time attack mode.

Time attack is a game mode in which you try to beat a level as quickly as possible. You start with all weapons and items, and the goal is to rip through the level as fast as you can – you don’t even have to kill everything (or anything!). When you select “Time Attack” from the menu, you get to pick which level you want to race through, and you play just that map – the game ends when you finish it, or die. What’s great about Mega Man 10 is that it automatically records a demo when you play, so you can watch your best run at any time. What’s also extremely cool is that you can submit your best time on a map, and Capcom keeps track of the top 30 times. What’s even more cool is that it gives you the option of submitting your time and your demo! So, others can watch your best run, and you can watch others’ best run… if they so choose!

How have I done so far on this new DLC map? See for yourself! For anyone to whom I’ve been slow to respond to in email over the past couple days… now you know why!

So, when am I going to get to the point and stop prattling on about my personal conquests, you ask? I’m glad you asked! This actually does relate to Last Bastion, in that I may want to include something like this! Why is that?

  • It adds a great deal of replay-ability to the existing maps.
  • It forces you to look at the maps in a whole new way.
  • It introduces a competitive element, which a lot of people enjoy.
  • The bottom line is that it’s fun! Racing through a map as fast as you can all the while trying to not screw up is a lot of fun!

So in the future, I may include something like this. And who says it has to stop with just “Time Attack”?!

Anyway, this is just some stuff I’ve been mulling over the past couple days. Hope you’re as intrigued by this as I am!

We’re working on getting it textured and animated.

I wish I knew how to do models, but I don’t.

    Whoa whoa whoa.. new shotgun?
You have to show some new stuff Carn, I’m the only one who is still commenting! That’s a bad sign!

I think everyone still thinks it’s canceled :) And hey, you’re not the only poster! CafeExpress posts, too! ;)

We’ll show some new stuff when we’re ready. First impressions mean a lot, after all! I think the gameplay video turned a lot of people off. That’s a mistake I’d prefer not to repeat.

Well, Mr. CafeExpress may only post in the forums, but I post right on the Vega site. And I don’t see how that video could have turned people off. That was just awesome and I’m waiting for that demo to be released…

So now I’m guessing the plot has someone to do with aliens? Something so cliche that we’ve seen in almost every shooter these days? FUCK YEAH! FINISH THAT GAME!

I agree on the video. I think for what it was trying to show, it did a good job. It was just trying to show off the basics of the gameplay and engine. However, I think some people were judging it by the standards of a finished game, and therefore weren’t as forgiving over certain things like lack of animation.

When we start to get some content that’s approaching being “final”, I think I’ll start showing some more stuff.

Oh, now I see… stupid 12 year olds.

Congratulations, it’s been 1 month since the last update.

Carn, I check this site everyday, and your twitter for the earliest updates I can get. I know you’re busy with the game and paying people and stuff, but I would like to see some of the progress you’ve made since the game was uncanceled. You don’t need to show me now, but whenever you can. I also made a topic on the IGN Forums about this game, so hopefully this’ll get some popularity. Huh, this’ll isn’t a word.

I certainly understand where you’re coming from. You’re eager for news/updates on the project and there hasn’t been a lot. But it’s going to take awhile longer before we get some things done to the point where it’s close to being a finalized version, and can be shown. I can tell you though that things are progressing well: we’re finally starting to get some great-looking textures done, as well as more models and animations. No one wants to show this stuff off more than I do, but things have to be finished first before they can be shown. A lot of things are getting there, though.

Honestly though, I wouldn’t bother posting stuff about this anywhere besides the Doom community – other people aren’t going to have an appreciation for the project in its very incomplete state, unfortunately. I know you’re excited about it, but I don’t think a lot of others are going to share in your excitement – at least not yet ;)
