QuakeCon Wrap Up – And New Shots!

Well, after a great weekend, QuakeCon is over, and we’re all back home. I had a blast this year. It was great getting to meet a bunch of new people and share the latest version of Last Bastion with everyone – something we’ve all worked very hard on.

I was really surprised at how well it was received. Even though this has been in development for a couple of years now and we’ve been working really hard on it, it’s still far from being a finish product – even the first level. But all weekend, people were really intrigued by what we had so far, and I constantly had people coming up to me asking me about it, with the majority of them sitting down and playing through it. With only a couple of exceptions, the feedback on both the visuals and gameplay footage was overwhelmingly positive! :D Needless to say it was a really great feeling.

But hey, don’t take my word for it! Now that QuakeCon is over, I have a full set of screenshots from the first level that was shown there! Enjoy! :)

One last thing: Some of you may be aware that our site got hacked over the weekend. Thankfully, I was able to restore it thanks to the help of Eruanna and Wartorn! Without their help, getting this back up wouldn’t have been possible (and definitely wouldn’t have been possible in such a timely fashion)! They deserve all of our thanks for getting this back up and running! So, thank you! :D

And BTW, I checked out the new Video firewolf uploaded. Was that music composed by Prince?

I saw that video, the animations have no weight at all to them and there’s missing animations everywhere, It’s hard to believe people get any sort of money/pay and can get away with that.

Ok, you are officially dumbass #1 You really think Brad is going to sell the game like that? The game isn’t finished asshole. It’s called a beta. This isn’t coming out till 2011 possibly.

No, all of the music so far is placeholder and from various Megaman games. We haven’t really had a finished level until a week or so ago, which isn’t enough time for him to do any music. But he’s done the sounds so far, however (though a couple aren’t original sounds and are in as placeholders). I’m really liking how it sounds so far. I think my favorite is the sentry warmup sound :)

  6. slyor64 says:

Oh, thought so. Can’t wait to hear his tracks when he finishes them.

    @Javid

You DO realize that this is nowhere close to release, right? Functionality was one of the main goals for this, and the game PLAYS well. My guess is that the models will be skinned and animated later, when the game is a bit further along

  8. slyor64 says:

I showed my little brother this game. What does he say? He says, “Those guns are ripped off from Borderlands.”

  9. Brad Carney says:

Only the crawlers and sentries really have finalized animations. All of the other animations (especially the weapons) are pretty much placeholders.

But seriously, I don’t see how anyone can think the crawler animations look bad.

Nice, very very nice 8]. This old computer doesn’t want to load up Firewolf’s video and it also doesn’t seem to want pull up those screenshots either ( :/ ), but from what little I can see, I’m really liking the art direction so far. Stylistically the models and the skinning on them are really awesome. I like the contrast of the windows (or are they lights?) and the rest of the map structure. Although I was thinking there would be some more color. I mean I can’t really see a whole lot just as thumbnails, but if I had any critique at all thus far, it would be lack of color in the maps. Although I’m sure it’s not going to stay that way for long, unless you’ve changed something :)

By the way, who did the mapping? Did you do it or were you able to find some more mappers? It’s looking pretty solid so far :D

  11. Brad Carney says:

Thanks man :) Yeah, the color issue is something we’re working on. I certainly never intended for the map to be so gray, but we’re working on expanding that texture set so there’s more color in it. That way, more of the map will be like that start room which had some nice blue color in it.

And yes, I unfortunately had to end up doing that map.

  12. Amp says:

Man, so I saw that video.

It feels like that game still needs something.

Like…some sort of mode to facilitate speed runs, like a “time attack” mode or something :P

  13. Brad Carney says:

Luckily for you, it will have exactly that :) Plus some other game mode goodness!

  14. Amp says:

Really? When was it coded in? Who first gave you the idea for a time attack? I bet it was some fatass who plays Guy in Street Fighter 4.

  15. Brad Carney says:

Hm, Guy in SF4… ha, I believe I know who I’m talking to now! :D What’s up, man? What place did you end up getting? I hear they lost the bracket and had to fill it out again based on their footage/people’s memories, so it took forever to finish up :|

Anyway, I got those in Saturday afternoon. Still need some major tweaks (like actually SAVING THE TIMES/SCORES), but they’re in and working! And I had the idea for those for awhile (plus another bonus one) for awhile now, but they’ve been grayed out on the main menu… until a couple of days ago, of course! :P

  16. Amp says:

As I remember it, before I was eliminated, I was told there were only 48 people left in the lower bracket.

Once I got eliminated I headed straight to my room to take a nap, goddamn I was tired from all the waiting.

Two of my matches ended up streamed, and I played horribly with stupid BS but still won. http://www.justin.tv/amperture/b/268441653

I wasn’t around for after they did that bracket reconstruction, it was all kinds of fucked up from the stories I hear.

Either way, good stuff. I’ll be paying attention to this project. Whenever you want me to lay down some speed run times, just throw me an executable copy of your code :P
