Actually, since you are trying something new with the engine, how about a SP mode like this:
On the first stage, it’s just you versus one bot, on a particular map. To advance to the next stage, you need to kill the bot to make them drop some health and armor, as well as whatever weapon they were carrying.
Weapons ammo and powerups are scattered throughout the map.
You keep your status when entering the next stage.
More advanced stages have multiple opponents with better equipment. 
If you get killed during a stage, you start over with the health and equipment you had at the beginning of that stage.
The difficulty can be calibrated very carefully, to prevent ammo starvation and diminishing health.
Another feature I would really like to see is co-op mode. All FPS have deathmatch or capture the flag, but the number that offer co-op are fewer.
Anyway, look forward to seeing the first public release!
