I haven't watched #2 all the way yet, but I have to say I'm not really crazy about what it takes to enter and leave camera control for the 3d view port. Is there a way to make it enter and leave camera mode with one button rather than escape and enter? Its kind of a hassle moving hand to opposite ends of the keyboard to enter and leave the camera. Ideally i'd like to be able to toggle it with middle mouse button, but at the very least having it tied to one key would be very nice.
As I'm working on a map now, I just got to thinking about this, and I realized that I'm using the numpad enter key to do that. I'm taking my right hand off the mouse and hitting it, which is very close to where my hand normally is, so it seems fine for me. (It's pretty similar to picking up my left hand and hitting esc when using WASD controls.) If you're picking up your left hand and hitting the enter key on the main keyboard, I can see how that might be uncomfortable.Originally Posted by Captain Xavious

Just put up tutorial #3! This one covers basic visual stuff, like texturing, lighting, and lightmapping. After watching it, you should have a grasp on how texturing and lighting works in maps, and hopefully be able to do it for yourself!Enjoy!

Figured most of this out myself, didn't realize I could change the lightmap resolution/shadows and just assumed my map didn't look as good as the official ones because I only had a few test light objects and was relying on face lighting for the time being.
I'm surprised you don't use prism mode more often. Is that something you're just doing for the tutorials, or how you map normally? I've been trying to use prisms any time I'm drawing something squarish that is going to have more than two or three faces exposed. It seems to save a lot of time for me, compared to doing faces manually, even with copy and paste.
Looking back on that, I probably should have used prisms a lot more. All 4 little "sectors" coming off of the main room could have easily been made with a prism, along with the ceiling "sector" and the light. I don't use them as much as I should, but I think for the purpose of this video where I'm really trying to show all the nitty gritty, it's fine to take a bit longer approach so more can be shown and you have more time to digest everything.
When I go from paper -> editor, I definitely go 100% prisms. When I'm doing hardcore detail, I tend to go more with individual faces. I'm not saying that it's correct or the best thing to do - it's just what I find myself doing. I certainly expect others to have different (and better) methods. Sounds like you're doing a good job of figuring things out though all on your own!
When are you going to make one on doors, lifts and moving platforms?
